Tsukuba Science City is located approximately 60 km northeast of the center of Tokyo and about 40 km northwest of New Tokyo International Airport. It is in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, with Mt. Tsukuba, a famous mountain in the Kanto Region, on the north and Lake Kasumigaura, Japan's second largest lake, on the east.
It stretches across the entire area of one city, namely Tsukuba City . The site covers an area of approximately 28,400 hectares (equal to about half the area of Tokyo's ward sections), most of which is on a plateau 20-30 meters above sea level.
