NEW FACILITIES IN THE CITY

In this city, a number of innovative facilities were introduced for its infrastructure.

UTILITY TUNNELS
UTILITY TUNNELSIn the City Center Zone, utility tunnels (7.4km in total length) were constructed to house conveyer pipes for the refuse collection, heating and cooling pipes, power cables, telephone lines, water pipes and CATV cables. Tunnels make facility installation and maintenance easier and eliminate a need for frequent road diggings for the utilities, keeping the street clear for a smooth traffic flow.

ZONAL HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM
ZONAL HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM A system to heat and air condition buildings in the City Center Zone is installed to keep the city clean, to prevent fires, and to save energy. Tsukuba Energy Service Ltd. started the service in 1983. It currently supplies 36ha area in the City Center Zone with chilled water (for a part of the area) and steam.

REFUSE CONVEYING PIPE LINE SYSTEM (Vacuum refuse collection system)
REFUSE CONVEYING PIPE LINE SYSTEM

This system is installed for the city to be prepared for a potential future deterioration of refuse collection efficiency due to the increase in volume and worsening traffic conditions, and to modernize the method as well as to save the labor for the cleaning program. Refuse deposited into a chute is sent by an air flow through the conveyer pipe to the central depository. In the 72ha area in the City Center Zone, a total of 11km long pipes are installed, and has been in operation since 1983.

CATV
CATV CATV service was introduced to cope with difficulties in the radio signal reception accompanying construction in the Science City, and to assure clear TV image reception. ACCS Corp. has been re-broadcasting TV and FM programs since 1983. Further, an experiment is under way since March 1985 to utilize the available 30 channels of band-width for other advanced utilization such as LAN.
