and Education District City Center
The City Center
Zone, an area of about 80ha, and of 2.4km north-south and 240m to 560m east-west,
is designed to be the center of cultural, commercial and administrative activities
of the city. Tsukuba Center Building opened in June 1983. In 1985, Tsukuba Medical
Center, Tsukuba EXPO Center, a shopping center "CREO", Tsukuba Center Bus Terminal,
Tsukuba-Sakura Apartment Complex and other commercial establishments were constructed,
and markedly changed features of the city. The opening of the Gakuen West Multi-Parking
in 1988 has been followed by the opening of the Tsukuba Culture Center "ARS" and
the special Business Facility in 1990, the Restaurant Building "MOG" and the South
1 Multi-Parking in 1993, and the Civic Friendship Center "Tsukuba CAPIO" in 1996,and
Tsukuba International congress center "Epochal Tsukuba" in 1999 and the commercial facility-"Q't" in 2005. Thus
this zone is taking the shape of an urban center with amenity and charm. Further,
with the lanch of the Tsukuba Express Railway in August 2005.TSC is to be the regional urban center as well as an international science-and-technology
complex.

CENTER BUILDING The Tsukuba Center Building,
constructed by UD as one of the cores of the city, has been the symbol of the
city and the center of cultural activities. Nova Hall (1,003 seats) with excellent
acoustics, Prefectural Tsukuba Information Center for the science city information,
and Okura Frontier Hotel Tsukuba.with full city hotel service surround a plaza
"the Forum". Also, Azuma Public Hall, banks, and shops and other offices are in
this complex.

CENTER "CREO" The shopping center "CREO"
with a large department store and a major supermarket, the largest commercial
facility in the prefecture with a floor space of 55,500m2, has been
managed by Tsukuba New Town Development Co., Ltd.
RESTAURANT
BUILDING "MOG" "MOG", a commercial facility
that houses various businesses, mostly restaurants, opened in October 1993. "MOG"
brings liveliness to this urban area, and will attract visitors to come back to
enjoy the various shops. The Tsukuba New Town Development Corporation is in charge
of construction and administration of the facility. |  | TSUKUBA
CULTURE CENTER "ARS" "ARS" opened in 1990
and houses an art museum and a library. It has a floor area of about 5,900m2.
The library is designed to be useful for local residents, meeting community need.
The art museum was built here so that it can serve as the cultural center for
southern Ibaraki Pref. HUD was responsible for the construction, and now the Ibaraki
Pref. government is in charge of the administration and management of the museum
division, and the Tsukuba Municipal government administers the library division.

TSUKUBA
CENTER BUS TERMINAL The Tsukuba Center Bus
Terminal, a connection point for the regional bus network, has 14 bus booths and
taxi pool. It also is the terminal for express highway buses to and from JR Tokyo
Station. Under Chuo Dori St. and the bus terminal, a terminal station for Tsukuba

WEST AND SOUTH-1 MULTI-PARKING Following
the completion of the first city-planned parking building in August 1988 (a 6-story
building (7 parking tiers) with a total capacity for 1,036 cars), a new city-planed
South-1 Multi-Parking opened in April 1994 by the Tsukuba Urban Transportation
Center with a capacity for 706 cars. |  | TSUKUBA
MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL This center is an
emergency hospital constructed in February 1985. In April of 1994 the General
Medical Check Center was also established and the Regional Cancer Center was opened

EXPO CENTER This was one of the government
exihibition halls in the City Center Area for Expo'85, and has been opened to
public as the commemorative building for the EXPO.Tsukuba EXPO'85 Memorial Foundation
is in charge of its management and operation. | BUSINESS
FACILITY This is a high-rise building for
business offices which opened in April 1990. It was constructed as a special business
facility based on the New Residential Built-up Area Development Act. It is 19
stories high (88m).with a panoramic view of Tsukuba Science City from the top

CAPIO This civic friendship center, which
opened in July 1996, has an arena for multi-purpose use such as sports and meetings,

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS CENTER (Epochal Tsukuba) Opened in June of
1999, this joint project by Ibaraki Prefecture and the Japan Science and Technology
Corporation will be a facility that can answer the needs of any convention, including
seminars, exhibitions, concerts, etc. and of course host the kind of world class
