The mission of National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED)is to contribute towards realization of a safe living environment through the development of efficient and reliable disaster prevention technologies that reflect the lessons learned from the past and help prevent loss of lives."Comprehensive Research and Development of Technology to Mitigate Earthquake Damage" and "Comprehensive Research and Development on Social and Political Isuues related to Disaster Prevention Resulting from Volcanic Eruptions, Meteorological Disasters, and Landslides" are our two main research themes.NIED has also established a nationwide earthquake observation network and operates and maintains large scale seismic and rainfall experiment facilities which are made available for common use.
