Science City at present
- (1). Population
- While
the planned growth of population of Tsukuba Science City had been up to 220,000,
the city had a population of 200,000 as of October,2005.
The revised plan made
in April,1998 estimated the future population at 350,000,as of around the year
of 2030,when large settlement is in prospect in the district along the Tsukuba
Express Line.

(2). City Development
- The Research and Education district is a fully-equipped
area, where arterial roads in north-south and east-west directions, sewage systems,
parks, and residences are systematically developed.
- In
the City Center Area, advanced urban infrastructure has been developed, such as
utility tunnels,a community central heating and air-conditioning system,a CATV
system, pedestrian walkways, the Tsukuba Center Building symbolic of the city,
a large-scale shopping center, a library, a museum, and community facilities.
- (3). National Research and Educational Institutions
- 46 national research and educational institutions are
in operation now. Their research activities are roughly classified into education,
construction, science and engineering, biology, and common use.
- About
13,000 employees are working at national institutions, and 8,500 of them are researchers.
- (4). Private
Research Institutions
- Many private research
institutions have branched out into the industrial parks and others in the Surrounding
Suburban district. Their research fields are mainly medicine, chemistry, electronics
and electricity, mechanical engineering, and construction. About 4,500 researchers
are working at the private institutions.
